Position Objective:   A 12-month, organized training program to advance the pharmacist’s knowledge, skills and abilities to provide medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions and settings. 

Upon completion of the program, competencies will be achieved in areas of acute care, ambulatory care, medication management, practice management, and practice related education/training.  The resident is also responsible for the efficient and accurate provision of pharmaceutical care as a pharmacist (i.e. traditional drug distribution and clinical pharmacy services).

Program Description: The PGY1 residency program is a 12 month learning experience.  Residents complete a 6-week introductory orientation to the Pharmacist position and complete 9 learning experience rotations, each during a 4 to 5-week period.  The “PGY1 pharma­cy residency program builds on Doc­tor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certifi­cation, and eligible for postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.” [ASHP 2017].

Essential Job Duties:

The resident will be a self-directed, independent, motivated licensed pharmacist learner guided by the Residency Program Director (RPD) and preceptor(s) for each learning experience.

  1. Satisfactorily complete the objectives of each learning experience rotation.
  2. Performs staff pharmacist functions as scheduled:
    • Reviews and evaluates written medication orders or prescriptions for therapeutic appropriateness, ingredients, strength and dosage, potential allergies, potential drug/drug and food/drug interactions, route of administration, and potential for adverse drug reactions.  Verifies the accuracy of order entry by authorized prescribers in computerized patient medication profiles.
    • Contacts the prescriber, as appropriate, to clarify orders and/or make recommendations concerning alternate therapies.  Documents interventions with health care personnel related to drug therapy
    • Provides drug information to patients, physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff where appropriate and upon request.  Provides medication counseling to patients.
    • Maintains accurate records as required by departmental policies and procedures and/or federal and state board regulations. Maintains and enforces the documentation and security of controlled substances and medication supplies.
    • Participates and supervises the daily operational duties in the dispensing area to which assigned, including assisting and assigning, closely monitoring and reviewing the work of Pharmacy Technicians, to assure availability, accuracy and timely delivery of medications.
    • Performs and supervises technical staff in the preparation of intravenous admixture solutions and chemotherapeutic agents, using aseptic technique.
    • Participates in patient care rounds and unit based services which may include: medication reconciliation, promoting medication efficacy/safety/cost improvement initiatives, patient care team education, participation in unit process improvement activities, and patient education and follow-up as appropriate.
  3. Performs 2 drug utilization evaluations.
  4. Participates in evaluating gaps in compliance with Regulatory Standards (i.e. Joint Commission Medication Management chapter, Board of Pharmacy and the ASHP Residency Program standards). 
  5. Contributes to P&T Agenda items and is required to attend monthly Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) committee meetings with the Clinical Coordinator and RPD.  Assists with minute-taking duties and review of minutes at least every other meeting. 
  6. Completes evaluations of each rotation in a timely manner (as scheduled), both for the learning experience(s) and of the preceptor(s); as well as, a final evaluation of the Residency Program.
  7. Develops and completes a major project, eligible for presentation and publication by the end of the Residency year (i.e. project milestones to be developed and followed).
  8. Participates in efforts to improve pharmacy processes and interdepartmental policies  and procedures which support the Pharmacy Department and Hospitals strategic goals.
    • Provides and documents clinical activities accurately and according to policies and procedures. Provides pharmacokinetic monitoring of patients receiving specific drugs; monitors parental nutrition; responds to emergency codes; observes patients for adverse drug reactions; documents all medication events via 4PTS.

9.Provides inservice education to hospital health care professionals. Presents at least one (1) continuing education presentation during the residency year.  Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings, various hospital committees and educational seminars. 

10. Performs other duties as required.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

The minimum level of education and experience for this position includes:

  1. The applicant must be a graduate (or eligible for graduation) from an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. The applicant must be a citizen of the U.S.A., or hold a visa allowing for the completion of the residency year.  AAMC cannot sponsor your visa. The applicant must desire to be a highly motivated pharmacist wanting advanced education and training that leads to an enhanced level of professional pharmacy practice.
  2. Preference for interview invitations will be given to those applicants with:
    • hospital pharmacy experience,
    • knowledge of the principles and practices of pharmacy and pharmacology and their application to the operation of a hospital pharmacy or outpatient facility,
    • knowledge of relevant Federal and State laws,
    • considerable oral and written communication skills,
    • demonstrable teaching ability,
    • a documented history of research and/or publication experience,
    • a history of presentations and/or professional meeting audience,
    • leadership in professional organizations,
    • awards/honors within pharmacy and community service.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Licensed or eligible for Pharmacist licensure in Maryland.  Maryland Pharmacist license to be obtained within 60 days from the start date; maximum 90 days. The resident must be licensed to work as a registered pharmacist in Maryland no later than ninety days after the start of the residency year, or the resident may be terminated from employment.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support; or within 30 days of hire date.
