Position Summary:

The nurse extern program is an 8-week immersive program inclusive of optional electives to provide Student Nurse Extern an opportunity to participate in the patient care  experience in an acute care environment.   Works under the delegated authority from a nurse to perform nursing functions; assists the nurse in collecting data for a nursing assessment; and is under the supervision of a nurse.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. The student nurse extern provides direct care to patients in a timely manner with special attention to personal hygiene in activities of daily living care and comfort, following departmental procedure and protocols.
  2.  Initiates and maintains all required safety measures and comfort care to patients.
  3. Participates in patient data collection by obtaining vital signs, intake and output, blood glucose, patient weights, and other data collection and records the  patient’s data in the electronic medical record in a timely manner according to policy and procedure.
  4. Assist in the performance of diagnostic and treatment procedures using approved procedure.
  5. After required competency validation, the Nurse extern may provide peripheral IV insertion and obtain venous blood samples, EKG, in and out bladder cauterization, bladder scans and other procedures validated on the CNA orientation skills checklist.
  6. The Nurse Extern can reinforce patient health teaching; after the initial teaching is, perform by the nurse.
  7. Accurately observes, records, and reports to the nurse all patient complaints, obvious change in patient condition concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress in a timely manner.
  8. Assists the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and/or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  9. Transports patients in accordance with established safety policies
  10. The student nurse extern must notify the assigned nurse or unit supervisor if they are aware that the patient’s condition has changed, do not know how to perform a delegated task, or is in an unfamiliar situation. The student nurse extern, request assistance, direction, and supervision from the nurse.

Required Education:

  • Must be enrolled in an Associate or Baccalaureate RN program of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of 2.7 GPA or be in good academic standing

License / Certifications

  • BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Maryland Board of Nursing C.N.A. certification

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force
frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

There is reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to
blood-borne pathogens.
