Position Objective
The Director of Major Gifts will assume responsibility for an existing donor portfolio, as well as develop and manage additional prospect and donor names to implement a comprehensive major gift portfolio. The Director will manage an active portfolio of prospects and secure major gifts of $10,000 and up. This position will develop and implement strategies for the identification, cultivation and stewardship of major gift donors and potential donors to increase overall retention and giving levels, and relationship management between donors and others on the board and staff who work with them. This position will focus on fundraising for a comprehensive campaign and special projects. Duties include recruiting and managing high-level volunteers within regional campaign committees and organizing cultivation and stewardship events. The Director of Major Gifts will be responsible for keeping the assigned prospects and donors informed about various aspects of Doctors Community Medical Center and Luminis Health, with the goal of establishing strong, meaningful and long-lasting relationships with those within the Director’s portfolio. In collaboration with other gift officers, this promotes support for the Annual Fund and Planned Giving programs, as well as for capital or special project support, and specialized fundraising campaigns. Duties may be deleted and additional duties may be assigned at the supervisors discretion.
Professional/Technical Competencies
1. Fundraising Knowledge
Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising terms and strategies as it pertains to donors, staff, vendors and volunteers. Particular expertise in the area of major gift strategies and techniques.
2. Marketing
Knowledge of marketing principles and strategies as they relate to fundraising and major gift procurement.
3. Ethical Practices
Demonstrated ability to adhere to regulations and policies pertaining to donors, and maintaining a high level of moral and ethical standards with regard to donor rights, etc.
Essential Functions
- Establishes and monitors a Major Gifts portfolio for the Foundation.
- Works with the Foundation, Board members, staff and volunteers as appropriate to set annual goals for Major Gifts.
- Develops and manages a Philanthropy Council to assist in securing major gifts.
- Manages a portfolio of clinicians to assist in securing major gifts through an emerging Clinician Engagement Program.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for the portfolio of prospects, developing and implementing a written donor strategy and relationship record (using Salesforce) of all interactions.
- Communicate with portfolio through face to face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship meetings, and written strategies; ensure that each major donor and prospect has a clear strategy and timeline for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Researches and identifies major gift prospects for annual, capital and special gift programs.
- Works closely with other Foundation staff members to establish comprehensive moves management plan and develops short and long-term business plans; provides mentorship to junior fundraisers.
- Meets regularly with key LHDCMC personnel, physicians and other leaders to encourage identification of major donor prospects, as well as to understand the needs of the organization.
- Works with the Vice President to develop a strategy for outreach to and stewardship of planned giving prospects and donors.
- Develops all print and web-based supporting materials for planned giving program.
- Assists Foundation staff with cultivation and recognition events.
- Participates in professional networks to maintain current knowledge of laws and techniques.
- Functions as a key member of the development team and provides additional support as requested to ensure the success of the Foundation in its mission and goals.

Knowledge/Experience
Required Minimum Education: Bachelors degree in related field
Required Minimum Experience: 3 to 5 years progressive fundraising experience.
Required License / Certifications: None
Experience in prospect research/identification and proposal writing preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Positive attitude and team-oriented.
Personal computer skills and experience with contact management and Excel databases required. Salesforce experience preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
