Position Overview

Reporting to the System CEO, this is an outstanding opportunity for a collaborative, authentic and results- oriented leader to serve as the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health and President, Anne Arundel Medical Center (COO). The system is a highly respected $1.3 billion regional system located in Annapolis, Maryland with 10,000 employees dedicated to providing outstanding quality and compassionate care. The COO will be responsible for the overall operations of the enterprise and will ensure excellence in the provision of efficient operations and clinical support for long-term sustainability.

This collaborative leader will build upon the foundation of strength of the organization and will foster the achievement of its goals of exceptional patient care and service, strong physician and clinical relations, superior market presence, and community engagement.

The Opportunity

The Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health & President, Anne Arundel Medical Center provides leadership and direction to the organization in conjunction with the Executive team. This position participates in the development and execution of the strategic goals and initiatives for Luminis Health system-wide and provides oversight of all operational activities at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center.

While working with the hospital’s leadership team to ensure high-quality, high-efficiency delivery of care, the Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health & President, Anne Arundel Medical Center exemplifies his/her commitment to Luminis Health Core RISE Values while exhibiting stewardship and excellence and is a catalyst for change and integrity. This leader will work in tandem with the Chief Executive Officer and the executive team in creating the short- and long-term strategic plan and will ensure the implementation of Luminis Health’s Vision 2030. This executive role models behaviors that support the organization’s mission, vision, and values while building trusting relationships at system, hospital, and community levels.

Key Responsibilities

The Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health & President, Anne Arundel Medical Center will be responsible for the following:

§  As Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health, this leader will be responsible for the overall financial performance of Luminis Health AAMC and Luminis Health DCMC, strategic planning, quality of patient care, community engagement, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. S/he will lead operations to ensure the short- and long-term goals and objectives are achieved.

§  As President, Anne Arundel Medical Center, this leader will partner with the System CEO and key executives to develop, direct, and implement the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), strategic initiatives, and operational plans to achieve organizational goals and objectives, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and vision to ensure the organization is financially sound and provides quality services. Decides the feasibility of strategic priorities and financial targets based on historical data and analytical reports.

§  Builds trust across the organization by being a visible and collaborative leader. Promotes a healthy organizational culture with high levels of employee and physician engagement.

§  Leads region-wide enterprise operations toward organizational targets. Drives a culture of performance and excellence across the region while applying nuanced strategies based upon market specific opportunities.

§  Directs the preparation of the region’s shortterm and longrange plans and budgets based upon organizational goals and growth objectives.

§  With high regard to patient satisfaction, maintains ethical standards to take corrective actions, when needed, with a patient-centered focus, while adhering to all policies and compliance with HIPAA and professional standards. Monitors and analyzes data on patient satisfaction and takes action to improve the organization’s Press Ganey standing.

§  Identifies opportunities to reshape fixed cost structures by optimizing alignment of service line and facility programming in way that meets community need without unnecessary duplication. Helps design new business models that allow the system to thrive. Continuously seeks opportunities for synergy throughout the system.


§  Provides and approves the selection of hospital executives who provide hands-on hospital operations and management in a critical environment. The Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health & President, Anne Arundel Medical Center will provide hands-on leadership, strategic direction, and operations management with a focus on exceptional quality patient care and fiscal accountability. Assuming accountability and responsibility in a challenging healthcare environment, this executive will identify opportunities for operational improvement, cost reduction, and workflow optimization to enhance efficiency and effectives across the hospital functions.

§  Motivates and leads a high-performing executive team; attracts, recruits and retains required members of the team, including physicians and clinical and non-clinical staff, with the ultimate goals being to build collaborative relationships within the organization and provide mentoring as needed.

§  Ensures adequate provision of services through contractual agreements. Negotiates, administers, and modifies contracts, including contracts with practitioners for rendering services at, or to, the organization.

§  Fosters open dialogue and expression of ideas and promotes communication in all directions throughout the organization.

§  Drives collaboration with leadership, including physicians, across the region’s vast clinical and operational footprint.

§  Organizes and monitors operations to accommodate and respond to patient needs, concerns, and complaints while continuously displaying a “can do” attitude across the organization.

§  Analyzes complex situations and executes decisions effectively with high personal integrity and the ability to operate effectively under pressure. This position demands high visibility and presence ensuring employee engagement in the organization with clinical and non-clinical staff as well as serving as the organization’s delegate for patients and their families.

§  Sets business standards for emergency preparedness initiatives, disaster response protocols, and business continuity strategies, ensuring the readiness to respond to emergencies and crises effectively.

§  Forecasts healthcare data for the region to ensure the effective allocation of hospital resources.

§  Complies with and ensures that all activities are in line with the organization’s compliance plan. Exhibits knowledge of regulatory obligations to hold the organization’s overall compliance with State, Federal, and JCAHO in the highest regard.

Candidate Qualifications

The Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Luminis Health & President, Anne Arundel Medical Center will be a strategic and innovative leaderwho will build on the organization’s strong legacy, while advancing priority objectives for continued growth. S/he will be a talented healthcare leader with a successful track record and extensive experience as a senior executive. The ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills in all aspects of healthcare administration including, but not limited to, patient care, clinical operations, finance, physician relations, human resources, and strategic planning.

This leader will possess outstanding communication, listening, judgement and interpersonal skills that build successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders, individuals at all levels of the organization, and the community. They will be an operationally talented and innovative leader that effectively collaborates and works synergistically with diverse constituencies to affect the cultural and operational changes necessary to ensure high quality, patient-centered care is delivered.

§  Ten (10) years of senior hospital leadership is preferred with a record of improving patient safety and quality.

§  A goaloriented leader with a focus on analytics to support decision making.

§  Possesses a high level of proficiency and success in problem solving and implementing innovative programs related to increased organizational operating efficiency.

§  Demonstrated effectiveness in managing operations and senior administrative/management/ supervisory personnel, evaluating, training, and motivating performance.

§  Demonstrated ability to delegate effectively and establish clear guidelines for accountability.

§  Successful at building consensus and provides strong leadership in a team environment, with the highest level of professional and personal integrity.

Education

§  Graduate Degree in Business, Finance, Medical/Healthcare Administration, clinical specialty or equivalent.
