Position Objective:

Under the direction of the manager (Director of Cardiopulmonary Services), this position supervises the daily operations of respiratory therapists and other staff. This position is the primary contact for respiratory and pulmonary services. Provides respiratory therapy modalities included in the scope of practices to patients in accordance with department standards. ADD Establishes and performs educational oversight for new and current staff.  Performs additional duties as they relate to the Team, Change, and Business leadership model of the organization.

This position has authority to perform supervisory duties including but not limited to hiring, evaluating performance, issuing final disciplinary actions under the review of Human Resources, and recommending discharge in collaboration with members of management and Human Resources. 

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Plans, schedules, and supervises the work of respiratory therapists and other staff, which includes hiring, conducting performance evaluations, counseling, and disciplining staff.
  2. Collaborates with cardiology staff to assess the learning needs and competencies of staff. Serves as a consultant/mentor for staff in areas of program development, clinical practice, and professional development.
  3. Designs, delivers, and assesses learning activities and curricula related to clinical competencies, departmental/organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and the use of clinical information technologies
  4. Provides training of staff, including orientation and cross training in order to assure quality care at all times. 
  5. Assists in the planning, development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives within the department.
  6. Assists in the planning, development and implementation of departmental objectives, staff responsibilities, policies, procedures and new services.
  7. Serves as a consultant/mentor for staff in areas of program development, clinical practice, and professional development.
  1. Participates in the development, coordination, and delivery of new staff orientation and education activities.
  1. Assists in ensuring all department, hospital, compliance, HIPAA and Joint Commission guidelines are met.
  2. Collaborates with staff and clinical educators to coordinate, monitor, and recommend improvements to manager.
  3. Provides technical supervision, direction, and support to respiratory therapists.
  4. Plans, develops, delivers and evaluates respiratory therapy treatment for patients.
  5. Completes Compass edits in an accurate and timely manner for submittal to the department Manager.
  6. Exhibits qualities that are consistent with the organization’s 7 core values.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited college or university
  • Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university if Associates Degree is in Respiratory Therapy
  • Three years’ experience working in an acute care facility as a respiratory care practitioner, one year of which includes experience leading or supervising staff

Required License/Certifications:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) as credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care State of Maryland license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification
  • Preferred: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Current PALS (Pediatric Advance Life Support) certification

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands - Medium Lifting

Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
