Position Objective:

The Manager of Biomedical Engineering coordinates all functions related to safety testing, repair, and maintenance of biomedical patient care equipment. In partnership with the Director of Biomed, this position will run the program in compliance with all Joint Commission and regulatory requirements and standards. This role will require collaboration with our clinicians and will require training and technical leadership around equipment operations, standards, and maintenance. In this role, you’ll support the equipment needs of all clinical areas. You’ll also monitor and support the clinical engineering budget. You’ll need to think fast on your feet and be capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. This will require you to build strong relationships with nursing, information systems, engineering, and other partners throughout the health system. This position will primarily provide oversight at the LHDCMC campus.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Oversees departmental compliance with DCMC policies and procedures and any applicable governmental and JCAHO accreditation programs.  Reviews and analyzes medical device incidents involving patient care biomedical equipment, correcting deficiencies as identified
  2. Provides oversight of the biomedical equipment maintenance, repair, calibration and evaluations of clinical equipment (e.g., Defibrillators, Beds, Infusion Pumps, and Ventilator’s) in accordance with departmental procedures.
  3. Responsible for biomedical service operational requirements which include the daily assignment of tasks pertaining to equipment repair and support. Monitor, and control budgets to assure the most cost-effective and efficient operation.
  4. Provide management for of other Biomed personnel. This includes employee motivation, hiring, discharge, discipline, promotion and performance evaluation.
  5. Provide technical training to other employees in areas such as: equipment operation and checkout, repairs, preventative maintenance, quality assurance practices, procedures, and documentation.
  6. Partner with the Director to in the evaluation of new equipment as required and make recommendations pertaining to its electrical and functional conformance to standards.
  7. Provides management support at LHDCMC and AAMC and partners with Director of Biomed on ongoing special projects and initiatives.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

The minimum level of education and experience for this position includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics/Biomedical Engineering Science.
  • Must have own vehicle, be willing to use it for work and be reimbursed for mileage, have a valid Maryland driver's license and a driving record with no more than two (2) points.
  •  Minimum 5 years of experience working with biomedical equipment in a clinical engineering environment.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of Team Lead/Supervisory experience.

There is reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands -

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
