Position Objective:

Receives medications and supplies according to departmental policy and procedure, and ensures their safe and appropriate storage.  Manages and maintains unit dose repackaging equipment and tray replenishment technology, converting bulk nonsterile medications into unit dose packaging, and supporting the emergency drug supply and stock medication tray systems.   Verifies that medications stored in alternate locations throughout the organization are maintained according to regulatory standards.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Performs all required functions during order receipt according to procedures established by the department. Accurately maintains barcode information in the pharmacy information system by scanning items during order receipt and ensuring a pharmacist adds barcode information when needed.
  2. Works with the Pharmacy Buyer to ensure appropriate max/par levels are assigned at the line item level as well as determine which products should be added or removed from pharmacy stock locations. Serves as back up for Pharmacy Buyer in the buyer’s absence.
  3. Restocks all anesthesia and crash cart trays according to departmental policy and procedures, and maintains accurate labeling, quantities, and cleanliness.
  4. Ensures look-alike/sound-alike medications are appropriately stored in pharmacy stock locations to avoid restocking and dispensing errors. Receives controlled substances, verifies accuracy of received order against purchase order, and is responsible for timely and accurate restocking into the controlled substance safe in accordance with departmental policies.
  5. Completes medication storage inspections throughout the medical center, and ensures expired medications are removed monthly from pharmacy stock locations. Provides each area with a copy of its inspection report to facilitate compliance and improvements in areas where pharmaceuticals are stored.
  6. Works closely with the Supervisor - Pharmacy Technicians to orient and train newly hired pharmacy staff by providing clear and accurate instruction and demonstrating required scope of activities. Ensures competency of all pharmacy staff in unit-dosing/pre-packaging related job functions, and the technology and practices that support the emergency drug supply system, following all department policies and procedures.
  7. With Pharmacist oversight, maintains accurate medication dictionaries for unit dose machine and label maker.
  8. Completes all unit dose repackaging for pharmacy use in a timely manner. Maintains packaging logs in accordance with Department Policies and Procedure and State or Federal Regulations.
  9. Investigates and resolves reported problems, communicates system issues to supervisors, and strives to ensure that problems are resolved to customers satisfaction.
  10. Identifies areas for improvement and successfully implements plans to address any issues as requested. Participates in at least one department or hospital committee or performance improvement project using Lean principles annually.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

Required Minimum Education.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Two years’ experience as a pharmacy technician.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Current Registration as a Pharmacy Technician from the Maryland Board of Pharmacy, in good standing.
  • PTCB Certified or ExCPT (National Pharmacy Technician Board Certification).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to work independently
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required, as well as advanced computer and typing skills.

Physical Demands: Medium

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects).

Pay Range
$17.40$25.50 USD
