Position Objective:
This is a full-time on-site role for an Endoscopy Technician located in Annapolis, MD. The Endoscopy Technician applies advanced technical skills in all Endoscopy procedures. The employee will be responsible for endoscopy procedures, sterilization of equipment, assisting in surgical technology, medical assisting, and collaborating with the medical team.

- Assists physician directly in procedures involving guidewire manipulation, stent placements, balloon dilations, stone retrieval, electrocautery, laser therapy including photodynamic therapy, endoscopic ultrasound, variceal and hemorrhoid banding, insertion of esophageal catheters, probes, naso and percutaneous gastric and jejunal tubes, polypectomies, fine needle aspiration, clipping of bleeding vessels, celiac plexus neurolysis, tumor obliteration, specimenprocessing, sphincterotomies and biliary manometry.
- Assists physicians directly with obtaining various patient specimens such as biopsies for culture, pathology and viral studies, brush cytology, microbiology and pH specimens. Demonstrates proper handling of tissue samples and proficiency in obtaining, labeling and documenting each sample properly according to hospital and unit policy.
- Sets up, maintains and troubleshoots all endoscopic equipment. Notifies unit leadership and Biomed of any problems as indicated.
- Manually clean endoscopes to remove gross debris in preparation for reprocessing by Central Sterile Processing. Follow all infection prevention standards for cleaning and testing of scopes.
- Responsible for maintaining appropriate levels of Endoscopy supplies, including distributing supplies amongst procedure rooms and utilizing par levels to take inventory.
- Orients new staff members to the unit
- Interacts with patients and families to ensure a positive patient experience. Transport patients, as necessary, within the facility according to policy and procedure.
Educational/Experience Requirements:
The minimum level of education and experience for this position includes:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associate’s degree in related field is a plus
- One year of similar experience preferred.
- Completion of a recognized training program is preferred
Required License/Certifications:
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS.
- Surgical Technician Certification (preferred)

More specific job-related tasks:
- Assists physician during Colonoscopy/Polypectomy procedures:
- Position patient left lateral. Abdominal support to assist scope progression.
- Applying grounding pad and attaching power cord to snare under supervision of nursing staff or physician.
- Colon decompression: assists with placement of guide wire and decompression tube.
- Assembling equipment for tattooing of colonic lesions.
- Tissue biopsies with proper labeling of specimens.
- Cauterization of AVMs: equipment required and generator usage.
- Assists physician during EGD/PEG procedures:
- Positions patient's head during procedure and inserts bite block.
- Snaring of guide wires during PEG.
- Maintains knowledge of biopsy technique.
- Under supervision of nursing staff or physician, provides placement of grounding pad and demonstrates knowledge of generator function.
- Assists with Sclerotherapy by properly handling sclerosing agent and adhering to prescribed safety precautions.
- Assembles Esophageal Banding equipment and assists with esophageal dilatation techniques (Maloney, Savory, Balloon).
- Polypectomy: uses snare and cautery.
- Cauterization of gastric bleeding: proper grounding and use of generator.
- Assists physician during ERCP procedures:
- Demonstrates understanding of multiple pieces of equipment specific to diagnostic findings.
- Assists physician during procedures.
- Anticipates physician need and secures necessary equipment specific to task.
