Position Objective

To provide personal and asset protection for patients, visitors and employees throughout the Medical Center facility, and to prevent any potentially hazardous conditions through continuous monitoring of all areas. This position is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day security operations and performs duties to ensure smooth operation as required. Orients, trains, schedules, monitors, and provides direction to staff.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Maintains personal and asset security by conducting complete and thorough hazard surveillance rounds with strong emphasis on protecting patients, staff and hospital property. Monitor radio communication, telephone and written notes for daily information; uses various methods of communication to include electronic and manual.
    1. Maintain good standing with the Maryland Department of State Police Licensing (MDSPLD) application, fingerprinting, certification and training requirements.
  2. When stationed in the Control Center responsible for the continuous monitoring of the CCTV for unwarranted actions and maintain the written/computer logs and email correspondence as per established policy.
  3. Responds timely to all emergency calls throughout the facility following established guidelines. Responds quickly, calmly, and effectively in emergency situations, including assisting with patient restraints as needed. Manage emergency situations and ensure execution of disaster plans; notifies appropriate leadership of emergency situations.
  4. Conducts preliminary investigations into thefts, shortages and other complaints involving potential criminal misconduct by questioning individuals involved with specific incidents. Keeps supervisor informed at all times.
  5. Prepares and submits written reports, investigations, and daily events in a complete, timely and accurate manner. Logs all responses and incidents.
  6. Conducts various levels of personal safety screening for weapons, contraband and any other unauthorized items permitted in the facility using different forms of manual and electronic screening devices to ensure a safe environment of care to heal, work and learn.
  7. Participates in crisis intervention with staff, patients, visitors and others, to restore and maintain order as quickly and safely as possible by applying the knowledge of growth and development across the life span to the care of patient.
  8. Provides staff education on safety topics and trains new Officers on all department policies and procedures.
  9. Performs regular patrols of  assigned areas on main campus and its satellite office buildings and regularly inspects designated facilities, fire extinguishers, helipads, alarm systems, close circuit cameras and other security equipment as required; address and/or report any concerns and or issues.
    1. Maintains accountability for valuables/property and other forms of evidence, ensures safekeeping and maintains documentation.
  10. Assists with keys, verify and issue contractor badges,  provide on campus traffic control, parking enforcement, monitors building systems.
    1. Readies and secures helicopter landing area. Escorts medical personnel to patient location. Provides support for patient transports.
    2. Provides safety escorts and assistance  for staff, visitors and patients as requested.
      1. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
      2. Performs fire drills as required.
        1. May have to work other shifts as necessary.
          1. Conducts briefing with incoming Lead and shift. Communicates with Security Supervisor and/or Management regarding staffing ensure proper coverage is required 24/7. The Shift Lead obligation is to remain on site until adequate coverage has been restored.
          2. Interacts with hospital staff of all departments forming a relationship with designated hospital leadership; provides communication of security plans and procedures, areas of focus, etc.
          3. Plans, schedules, and supervises the activities of staff.
          4. Contributes to and assists Supervisor with employee and team performance by coaching, counseling, motivating, and evaluating employees on a continual basis including formal performance review process. Recommends disciplinary action as needed.

Proactive in addressing compliance issues; reporting through appropriate channels such as supervisor, chain of command and Ethics Point. Completes mandatory introductory and ongoing training within the specified timeframes.
  4. Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  5. Works collaboratively and supports efforts of team members. Demonstrates exceptional customer service and interacts effectively with physicians, patients, residents, visitors, staff and the broader health care community.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of Health care Safety and Security experience preferred but not required.
  • Must pass a criminal records background check prior to employment.
  • Maryland Security Guard Card preferred.
  • Possesses strong verbal, interpersonal communications skills and excellent customer service a must.
  • Successfully complete Conflict Management training and demonstrate the ability to non-escalate, de-escalate and ensure safe physical stabilization tactics within six months.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license or valid license from the state in which the employee resides with no more than two (2) Points on current driving record.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain a State of Maryland Guard Card and maintain good standing with the Maryland State Police.
  • BLS/CPR Certification through the American Heart Association is preferred and must obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • IAHSS Basic Officer Certification preferred and required within six months or promotion.

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands – Heavy

Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
