Position Objective:

Evaluates patients in the acute care medical setting for Speech-Language Pathology services and provides therapeutic intervention according to professional and departmental standards. Assesses the appropriateness and effectiveness of services provided based on the needs of the individual patient and completes documentation according to the standards set by the Inpatient Rehabilitation Department.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Performs Speech-Language Pathology evaluations and treatments involving varied diagnoses and units using a variety of appropriate treatment techniques and completes documentation according to established departmental policies and procedures.
  2. Meets departmental productivity standards and completes productivity logs in a timely manner.
  3. Participates in quality and patient safety initiatives engaging in excellent customer service practices including but not limited to following ICARE principles.  Consults with and serves as a resource for physicians, nursing staff, and other clinicians to increase knowledge of Speech-Language Pathology scope of practice to identify patients who would benefit from Speech-Language Pathology services.
  4. Stays up to date on hospital policies, departmental requirements and process improvement initiatives by reading all correspondence (meeting minutes, weekly updates, etc) and participating in huddles.  Promptly responds to communication and requests.
  5. Provides technical supervision, direction, and support to students and volunteers.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

The minimum level of education and experience for this position includes:

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Previous experience required; acute care experience preferred.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Current license in Speech-Language Pathology by the Maryland Board of Audiology/Hearing Aid Dispensers/Speech and Language Pathologists.
  • Current Certificate of Clinical Competence with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS CPR certification.

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Employee may observe, transport, or administer medication in keeping with hospital and departmental policy and procedure.

Physical Demands – Light lifting

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
